Google is the largest search provider in the world, providing 67.7 percent of all searches in the world. Formed in 1998 during the rise of the internet by Larry Page and Sergey Bin they are headquartered in Mountainview, California. Formally they are in the 'internet, software, and hardware' space.

Google recently became a subsidiary of Alphabet, which is a large IT conglomerate. In reality they have their hands in almost every area of life. Their products range from Google Home devices that listen to your voice to automate the home that compete with Amazon's Alexa, to their Android operating system that has the largest percentage of adoption in the world (%86.2 in 2016 - https://android.jlelse.eu/apple-vs-android-a-comparative-study-2017-c5799a0a1683), to their cloud offering, not to mention their productivity tools and entertainment offerings such as YouTube and Google Docs. 

Alphabet has traditionally been seen to compete with other internet search engines, then tier 1 ISP's, and then into social media and content. However, due to the increasing disruption that IT is creating, google is now competing with very non traditional companies. GM and Boeing see Alphabet as a competitor, so its probably best to say they compete with anyone who has a fear of disruption to their industry from IT. 

Google is a dynamic company that has a lot of moving parts and is very focused on pushing technology forward. This is why we chose this company, it's fun to be on the bleeding edge!
